If you are about to start on a computer dating journey, there are a few simple rules or guidelines you must keep in mind. It may be tempting to act or sound differently than you normally do because you know the other person cant really see you. However, it is not a good idea to try to pretend to be someone that youre not. By following a bit of good advice, your experience is bound to go more smoothly.
The first thing to be absolutely certain of is the reputation of the program you choose. Be sure that it has a good reputation and that your privacy is guaranteed. Make certain that any private information such as your personal email will not be sold or given away.
Next, just like real life, remember, honesty is always the best policy. If your relationship works out and you plan to eventually meet, the truth will be obvious. Go with it right from the beginning and there will be no awkward explaining to do later. Use the good manners your mamma taught you.
Another thing that applies to computer dating as well as regular dating is to always show an interest in the other party. Ask about their interests, likes, hobbies etc. instead of focusing on yourself. Its easy to rant away on a computer screen when you cant see whether the other party is listening or even interested. By showing an interest in them instead of focusing on yourself, you are more likely to be able to keep the conversation moving.
Be yourself and be genuine. Even if the other person cant see you, they will be able to pick up on behavior that doesnt seem natural. If you suddenly start talking slang or swearing, you wont be able to keep it up and the other person will soon realize you are being phony.
Its easy to get carried away with words and questions when we arent actually speaking to someone. Remember to take things slow. Try not to ask a thousand questions in the very first email. Let the conversation proceed slowly.
After a time, you may decide that no response means the other person is not interested. If thats the case, dont hound or write rude emails. Chances are it is not a friendship that was meant to be. Respect the other persons right not to pursue things any farther.
Once youve started up what looks like a promising friendship, it is recommended that you take your profiles down from the dating site you are using. It says that you are ready to make a commitment to this friendshipat least until you both decide otherwise.
Keep these few pointers in the back of your mind and your computer dating experience will hopefully be a great one.
